Association
According to Piaget and Vygotsky there are multiple stages of development; however, both Piaget and Vygotsky believe the acquisition of knowledge is influenced by previous experiences and their environments (Glassman 1994). As people progress through the stages of development the knowledge they acquire is collected and is organized into stored memory patterns located in their Long Term Memories (LTM). When new stimuli are experienced they are initially processed and compared to previous knowledge structures retrieved from the LTM. Through comparing the new to the old associations are then made between the new stimuli and the existing structure to aid in the reinforcement of learning the new information. This method of learning is also known as socioaffective strategies (Orey 2002).
Have you ever struggled trying to learn names of people you have just met? Not just remember them, to actually learn them? We have all been there at a social event being introduced to dozens of new people; or even as teachers in our classrooms struggling to learn 30 – 120 student names as quickly as we can manage.
Each of us has our own techniques to conquer the daunting task of learning our students’ names; name cards, repetition, “getting to know you” games, and many more. Have you ever attempted to learn them through song?
In this section you will be focusing on learning names of people you meet through the use of “Association” to a familiar commercial jingle.
